Dr. Rice is a Professor of Medicine with tenure in the Division of Allergy, Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Vice President for Clinical Trials Innovation and Operations for the Vanderbilt Institute for Clinical and Translational Research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). He currently serves as the director of the VUMC Medical ICU, director of Respiratory ECMO, and the medical director of Vanderbilt’s Human Research Protections Program (IRB). He is also the Associate Editor for the Critical Care Section of the journal CHEST. In addition to caring for critically ill patients in the Vanderbilt Medical Intensive Care Unit, Dr. Rice is also an established clinical trialist, having designed, conducted, and published numerous practice-changing multicenter clinical trials in critically ill patients. Since 2011, he has spent considerable research time conducting large, pragmatic trials of comparative effectiveness research in critically ill patients as part of the Vanderbilt Center for Learning Healthcare.
